History In around the year 300 the British became Christians and since the 16 century they have been Protestants and gradually creating the Church of England.
The Christian churches
They are divided into four: The Church of England, Church of Scotland, Free Churches and the Roman Catholic Church.
The Church of England is the national church England. The monarch is the head of the church, the parliament has a saying in how the church functions but it is not a state church.
In 2007 the Sunday services was attended by 978,000 every week.
The Church of Scotland was created in 1560 by John Know and is the largest protestant church in Scotland. It has no parliament supervision. In 2008 10% of the Scottish population was official members of the Church of Scotland although 42% identifies themselves as Church of Scotland by religion.
The Free Churches are former churches of the churches of England and Scotland but have chosen to break away for many different reason for example they refused to accept the episcopal rule or hierarchical structures and unlike the other two churches they do have ordained women ministers.
The main churches are the Methodist, Baptist, the united Reformed Church, Pentecostalists and the Salvation army.
The Roman Catholic Church The Roman Catholic church members were persecuted and discriminated after the reformation. Today Catholicism is widely practiced throughout Britain and enjoys complete religious freedom.
Less than 10% of the population is a member of the Catholic Church.
